Samsung Galaxy phones could see smoother multitasking as Android 17 introduces tighter memory controls, a move that may help devices with modest hardware stay responsive.

New per‑app limits arrive

Google’s latest Android release adds per‑application memory caps that prevent a single misbehaving program from exhausting available resources. The feature already runs on Pixel devices, and the company says other manufacturers are expected to follow within a year.

How the limit works

When an app reaches its assigned ceiling, the system first shifts some of its pages into compressed memory, known as zRAM. If the program continues to demand more, Android may terminate it to protect overall performance.

The change operates behind the scenes, so users are unlikely to notice the transitions. That low‑profile approach is intentional; the goal is to keep the experience fluid without drawing attention to the mechanics.

Potential impact on Galaxy devices

One UI 9, built on Android 17, will inherit these limits. Samsung has not announced a rollout schedule, but the integration suggests future Galaxy models will benefit automatically.

The update does not add extra physical memory. Instead, it aims to make better use of the 4GB to 16GB of random‑access memory that many phones already contain.

For flagship users, such as those with a Galaxy S26 Ultra, the effect may be modest because ample capacity already exists. In contrast, a budget Galaxy A-series phone could see a noticeable lift, as each gigabyte counts.

Samsung already offers memory tools through Device Care, letting owners see which programs consume the most resources and manually close them. Android’s new limits act deeper, enforcing caps at the operating‑system level before a rogue app can affect the broader system.

Historically, Android relied on a generic cleanup routine that closed older processes when memory ran low. That approach sometimes forced the system to sacrifice several background apps to keep a single demanding one alive. The per‑app ceiling is a shift toward more granular control, reminiscent of earlier attempts to curb background bloat but now with automatic enforcement.

It’s a bit of a weird trade‑off, but it works. By restricting one app’s footprint, other programs stay in memory longer, reducing the need to reload pages in Chrome, refresh feeds in Instagram, or re‑establish routes in Maps.

Google indicates the mechanism is compatible with a wide range of hardware configurations, meaning even entry‑level models can enforce the limits without a performance penalty.

Samsung has not confirmed when the limits will be active across its entire lineup. Nonetheless, the fact that One UI 9 is based on Android 17 suggests the feature is already in the software stack for upcoming releases.

If the new controls keep more apps alive in the background, users of lower‑spec Galaxy phones may notice fewer pauses when switching between tasks. That practical benefit could outweigh any fanfare about AI features or visual upgrades.
