Xiaomi’s upcoming HyperOS 4 update appears to be aligning more closely with the launch of Android 17 than previous versions. New data suggests that the company is currently testing the new interface exclusively on devices that are also moving to the newer Android base. This would mark a significant shift from previous update cycles.
Testing data points to a tighter link
Analysis of the test results shows that 112 Xiaomi devices are set to receive Android 17. Of those, 108 are already part of Xiaomi’s work on HyperOS 4. This indicates that almost the entire list of phones receiving Android 17 is also being prepared for the next major software release. The situation is very different for phones that will remain on Android 16. So far, none of those models have appeared in the same HyperOS 4 test data.
Xiaomi has not confirmed this approach, so the final list of supported devices has not been set. The current gap in the data is difficult to ignore, however. This suggests that the new software may only be offered to phones that have upgraded to Android 17.
Why the change?
Historically, Xiaomi has allowed phones to run a new HyperOS version even when their Android version remained the same. The previous HyperOS 3 rollout followed this pattern on several models. While those phones did not receive every single new feature, they did get the new interface and most of the main changes. Users naturally expected HyperOS 4 to follow the same path.

Some observers believe Xiaomi wants to change that strategy. Linking the new interface directly to Android 17 could make the development process smoother. It may also reduce the workload required to maintain support for older hardware. If the strategy holds, older phones that stop receiving Android updates will also miss out on the latest HyperOS version.
For devices that are still inside their support period, security updates will likely continue. The main concern is that these phones may miss the new visual design and features of HyperOS 4. This creates a situation where a device remains supported for years, yet its software experience stays stuck on an older version. It feels like a missed opportunity for users who still have good hardware.
There is still time for Xiaomi to adjust its plans before the update reaches the public. Android 16 builds could still appear as HyperOS 4 gets closer to release. Until then, the test data provides a strong hint about the direction the company is taking.
